Celebrating OCD Awareness Week: Let’s Talk About ROCD

This week is one of the best of the year in the mental health world — it’s OCD Awareness Week, a time dedicated to shining light on the many forms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

To help spread awareness, we’re exploring some lesser-known OCD subtypes that can be difficult to identify — but deeply impactful. Today’s focus is on a form of OCD you may not have heard of before: Relationship OCD, or ROCD.

What Is Relationship OCD?

Relationship OCD (ROCD) is a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder that centers on intrusive doubts, fears, and questions about one’s romantic relationship. Individuals experiencing ROCD may find themselves consumed by obsessive thoughts like:

  • “Do I really love my partner?”

  • “Does my partner truly love me?”

  • “Is this the right relationship for me?”

  • “What if they’re cheating on me?”

These thoughts are not a reflection of the quality of the relationship itself — they’re driven by anxiety and uncertainty that feels out of control.

Compulsions in ROCD: What They Look Like

Just like with other forms of OCD, these intrusive thoughts often lead to compulsive behaviors — actions meant to temporarily relieve anxiety. In ROCD, this might look like:

  • Repeatedly seeking reassurance from friends or family

  • Comparing your relationship to other couples or past partners

  • Analyzing your own feelings constantly to “prove” the relationship is right

  • Checking your partner’s behavior for signs of love or betrayal

The cycle of intrusive thought → anxiety → compulsion can be exhausting and painful — and it’s often misunderstood.

You’re Not Alone

If you’ve experienced persistent doubts or obsessive questioning in your relationship and it feels like more than the occasional concern, you’re not alone — and it’s not a flaw in your relationship. It may be a sign of ROCD, which is treatable with the right support.
